Mandala and Keyhole Garden Beds for the Cold Climate Part 1

Does it really sound absurd to suggest that rectangular garden beds might not be the most efficient growing form? While they’re certainly not bad, there is a better option if you’re thinking about:

  • Maximum efficiency in space utilization
  • Combining beds to form a “super garden bed” that’s even more efficient by creating functional connections between beds and sharing resources and infrastructure
  • Planting trees or other perennials inside your beds alongside vegetables, where these perennials support annuals through mulch production, increased fertility, soil hydration, and beneficial fungal inoculation
  • Implementing bed rotation, where animals can work the soil during off-seasons

That better choice is the keyhole garden bed.

By simply adopting a different geometry—without any additional expense—all of this becomes possible. In a previous newsletter, we explored keyhole applications in tropical settings, where we created keyhole beds of bananas, sweet potatoes, and papayas. Now, let’s explore how to develop keyhole beds in temperate climates to bring all these benefits to your cold-climate garden.

Keyhole gardens are a simple and transformative practice that can revolutionize your gardening through nothing more than geometry.

Keyhole Garden Beds

A keyhole bed is simply a circular garden bed with a straight path running to its center, where the path widens to create a standing space. This design allows you to work from the center outward.

Your growing space occupies the area between the path edges and the outer perimeter. By design, it is a double-reach bed—the bed depth equals roughly twice your arm’s length. The layout divides plants into zones by harvest frequency: at the outer perimeter (“c”), plant crops you attend to only once per season, while, closer to the path (“b” and “a”), place plants requiring frequent attention. This creates a polyculture bed by excellence.

A single keyhole bed requires 3.5–4.2 meters (11.5–13.75 feet) in diameter, depending on the thickness of your weed barrier (Component 4).

This geometry delivers the most efficient growing-space-to-path ratio possible.

Combining many keyhole beds into a mandala bed

Because the keyhole bed is circular, you can arrange multiple single keyhole beds into a unified structure and even add a central circle of perennial-growing space in the middle, all sharing resources and infrastructure without extra effort. In fact, this creates a synergistic effect that makes everything more efficient, fertile, and resilient.

A complete mandala requires 10–12 meters (33–39 feet) in diameter, depending on your weed barrier thickness (Component 4).

This arrangement of multiple keyhole beds is called a mandala bed because the circular geometric formation enhances the bed’s overall function.


Keyhole beds and mandalas of keyhole beds have proven, across many different climates and situations, to completely transform home gardening for the better.

This is an elegant and intelligent design that maximizes growing space, integrates functionally with the rest of your garden, trees, and even animals. Beyond productivity, it creates a beautiful space, can be positioned along terrain contours, and is fully adaptable and modular—allowing you to develop your own practice while building soil and restoring nature.

Notice how the keyhole beds fit perfectly into the landscape (see Figure 12.5).

They can serve as the backbone of any sustainable gardening practice.
